The History of the ERTL Company
Nowadays ERTL toys and models are manufactured all over the world, however, this famous brand had humble beginnings. In 1945, Frederick Ertl Sr. began making handmade small-scale replicas of agricultural equipment and tractors at his home in Dyersville Iowa.
Ertl’s toys and models became more popular, so the business expanded and the ERTL Company was established. The first Ertl tractors were produced in the late 1940s and became part of the burgeoning market for agricultural toys. As the market grew, Frederick Ertl Sr. made some shrewd licensing deals allowing ERTL to manufacture replicas of well-known brands such as John Deere.
It is deals such as this, along with the brand’s reputation, that mean ERTL toys and models are so collectible– which is why the company is also known as ERTL Collectibles.
In 1999, British toy company RC2 Corporation, now known as TOMY, took over ERTL. This acquisition allowed ERTL to expand and grow its reach.
